Peer Mentors

As part of our commitment to supporting social and emotional development at school, eight Year 6 children have recently completed a three-week training programme to become Peer Mentors.

These children were carefully selected based on their potential to be positive role models and their interest in working with younger pupils. The programme gives them the opportunity to develop their confidence, leadership, and communication skills.

Each Peer Mentor is paired with one or more mentees—often younger children who may find social situations challenging, need support making friends, or benefit from guidance during playtimes.

Mentors and mentees meet once a week for a structured activity, but mentors are also encouraged to check in informally, such as during playtimes. They act as a buddy, someone to talk to, and a source of encouragement.

Mentors might:

  • Teach their mentees new games

  • Help them build friendships

  • Support positive social interactions

  • Be a friendly face in the playground

"I really like meeting up with my mentee—we get to talk a lot about things we like to do."

— Year 6 Peer Mentor

“It’s fun to help kids, it makes me happy to be with my mentee”

— Year 6 Peer Mentor

"My mentor comes to see me at playtime to see if I am alright."

— Peer Mentee

This programme is already making a positive impact, helping children feel more included, confident, and supported in their daily school life
