Our School Council
At our school, we are proud to have a vibrant and active School Council that plays a key role in school life. Our council is made up of elected representatives from each class in Years 2 to 6. These pupils (2 from each class) are chosen by their classmates through a democratic voting process, giving every child a voice in who represents them.
The council meets regularly—usually once a week—and is supported by a member of staff. What makes our School Council particularly special is that it is truly led by the children. Members elect their own Chair and Vice Chair, who take responsibility for running the meetings, with support as needed. This encourages leadership, responsibility, and confidence among our pupils.
Our School Council is more than just a group of pupils — it’s a team that helps shape our school. Members bring ideas and concerns from their classes to each meeting, and then share outcomes and updates back with their peers. This ensures that the council is connected to the wider school community and that all children feel heard.
The children take an active interest in all areas of school life and are involved in real decision-making. Some recent examples of the council’s work include:
-
Menu Feedback: Participating in a food tasting session with the borough catering department, where pupils shared their thoughts on a proposed new school menu.
-
Playtime Improvements: Suggesting ideas to enhance playtimes, such as new equipment and more inclusive games, to make playtimes more fun and fair for everyone.
-
Fundraising: Coming up with creative fundraising ideas to support both school projects and charitable causes.
-
Classroom and School Environment: Giving feedback on how to improve learning spaces and communal areas around the school.
-
Special Projects: In some cases, additional children are invited to take part in specific projects—chosen by their class teachers—giving even more pupils the opportunity to get involved.
Throughout the school, we encourage all children to speak up, share their ideas, and take an active part in shaping their school experience. The School Council is a brilliant example of how pupil voice is valued and celebrated at every level—and our children are always enthusiastic, thoughtful, and full of great ideas to make our school the best it can be.
